São Jorge DOP Cheese and Ilha Azul Cheese Win GOLD at the 13th Portuguese Traditional Cheese Competition for Prolonged Maturation

São Jorge DOP Cheese with 4, 7, 12, and 24 months of maturation and Ilha Azul cheese, both distributed by LactAçores, have once again been awarded a GOLD medal at the 13th Portuguese Traditional Cheese Competition for Prolonged Maturation. Organized by CNEMA and Qualifica, this recognition is the result of a blind tasting of various samples representing different regions of the country.

According to José Carlos Serrão, General Director of LactAçores, "These awards reflect the work that our team and producers have been developing to enhance the excellence of Azorean products and provide a unique experience for all consumers."

The São Jorge DOP Cheese, recognized nationally and internationally, has been exclusively produced on São Jorge Island since its discovery in the mid-15th century. Made from raw cow's milk, rennet, and salt, this cheese has a strong aroma and a slightly spicy taste. The minimum maturation is 3 months, with a maximum of 36 months.

The distinctive characteristics of São Jorge DOP Cheese result from the island's climatic conditions, which lead to varied pasture cultures, producing an exceptional cheese. Excellence is the word that best characterizes São Jorge DOP Cheese, ideal for sharing great moments.

Ilha Azul Cheese, produced by the CALF cooperative and an integral part of LactAçores with its factory on Faial Island, won the coveted gold medal for the second consecutive year, attesting to the continuous excellence of this cheese. The Moledo and Capelinhos cheeses, also from CALF, won silver medals, further consolidating LactAçores' reputation in the national market.

Ilha Azul Cheese is made with milk from Faial Island, which gives the flavor and unique characteristics to each cheese. Ilha Azul Cured Cheese is a semi-hard cheese with a cylindrical, yellowish color. Produced following a traditional recipe and the classic cheese plate format, Ilha Azul is perfect for any social gathering and to share with loved ones.

LactAçores celebrates the ongoing success of its associated cooperatives and expresses its gratitude to everyone involved in the production and promotion of the finest traditional portuguese cheeses. The company reaffirms its commitment to offering high-quality products, valuing tradition and innovation in cheese production.
